Pi-Believe It or — What #29

by Filed under Believe It or What

“For when the One Great Scorer comes / To write against your name / He marks not that you lost or won / But how you played the game”.

Unfortunately that principled attitude to sporting endeavor seems to have slipped in the last century or so, as witnessed by the Floyd Landis cycling debacle. The hapless Mr. Landis, having mounted the winner’s podium to celebrate his Tour de France victory, has now been branded a drug user and a cheat, fired by his team, and at the time of writing looked like being stripped of the famous yellow jersey. If so, he joins an ever-longer list of sports superheroes brought to earth by tests revealing use of illicit performance-enhancing substances. Pi Consulting prides itself on its realistic view of the human condition, and proposes a new world order in sport, the “Pill-popper-lympics”, based loosely on the idea of the 1930s Dance Marathons. Participants would be actively encouraged to pump their systems full of the stimulants, chemicals, steroids, hormones etc. of their choice, all carefully logged on clipboards by the umpires. Contestants would then run, jump, cycle, breakdance, stand on one leg etc. until they drop. Last man standing is the winner. (Source: Washington Post, Pi)
